HEADING back to work right after going through an arduous yet rewarding journey with your newborn baby may take some getting used to especially for new Mums.
We know that finding the right balance between family and work can be a daunting task but, lucky for you, we’re here to give you all the support you need!
COMMON CHALLENGES & SOLUTIONS
Knowing what you’re up against is only part of the battle and learning to deal with these challenges is almost like winning the war.
Here we list some of the common challenges and solutions to help you make it through your transition as a working mum.
Know Your Rights if You’re Pumping at Work
In many countries, you are entitled to express breast milk at work and employers must provide space and time for nursing mums to pump.
While it is uncommon to find dedicated lactation rooms at workplaces in Malaysia at the moment, it is heartening to know that more and more companies are setting up such facility to support nursing mums who return to work once their maternity leave comes to an end.
Be Prepared
You might want to consider getting a second pump set as spare for use at your workplace. This will help you to be prepared as you do not need to worry about forgetting to bring along your breast pump from home.
Stock Up Your Breast Milk
It is good to plan ahead and you can start pumping as early as possible in order to build stock of your breast milk before heading back to the work force. Be sure to store your breast milk by following the right process.
Talk to Your Colleagues
While you are not obligated to tell your colleagues when you are pumping, you should give them a heads up as to what you are going through and whenever you need to take breaks to pump. This will not only keep them informed but also maintain your working relationship with them.
Choosing a Childcare
It is normal for you to worry about your child when you’re at work. Hence, take the time to survey and select the best childcare that fits you and your family. From engaging a maid/nanny or taking your little one to a childcare centre such as kindergarten, there are plenty of options for you to choose from when it comes to childcare.
Look After Yourself
It is okay to take time off from juggling parenting and work duties. Re-energise yourself by doing things you love or just use that free time to get some much needed rest.
CONCLUSION
We know that breastfeeding in itself is a challenging task and working at the same time is almost seemingly impossible to do.
However, the most important thing to remember is it all boils down to willpower. As cliche as it sounds, the old adage where there’s a will, there’s a way rings true in every sense.
